A month ago I began to create quick studies of my Refugee Stories series using watercolor and collage. Hand embroidery is a slow process, too slow sometimes to hash out quick ideas.
Another reason to start sketching was to prepare for a soft ground etching class at Kala Art Institute that I will take in December. It's a short class, three weekends with Theadora Varnay Jones, an artist whose work I've admired for many years. I want to be able to jump right in and have some solid ideas to work with so as to make the most of the class.
I know my ideas are all over the place at the moment but I know if I just keep with it, doing a quick study or two a day, the elements will become cohesive. One idea can lead to ten more. Hopefully, by the time December rolls around, I'll have at least five strong ideas that I can use in my class at Kala.
