In the 1990’s a myth was born about a detail of the Underground Railroad in the United States. We were told that quilts were used like Morse code or semaphore to relate directional messages to slaves on the run. Even though it was a myth, we could push this medium as a messenger for contemporary global issues. Quilts offer a creative glimpse into history using quilt patterns to reflect important issues of the day. What better way to provide a lasting glimpse of our current times to future generations? I am developing a quilt pattern language that reflects some of these contemporary issues. Some initial subjects include: revolution, water conservation, Colony Collapse Disorder, migration, climate change and the digital revolution.
